In addition there is also the $$$ problem : I could afford the $326.00 Contax IIa at that time but I had no other financial solution than the DIY option to have it serviced. It's exactly what Russ Pinchbeck from the Kiev Survival Site says : buying an old camera is the same process than buying an old VW Beetle : you know that at one time you will have to go through the motor deck with your wrenches and screwdrivers, but you probably wanted it that way ! Unless I would use my modern cameras only and wouldn't bother using classic cameras that are less convenient in the field, obviously.Īs the information sources to service many classics are now largerly displayed on the Internet, there is quite nothing anyone can't do with lots of patience, good organisation, good tools (available easily online from anywhere in the world, too), method and a basically logical state of mind. The home made overhaul is just what makes having and using classic cameras something special and funny. Yes, there are different logics with classics. Looking hard you might find one for $12,000 and spending that much for a camera that I would use to take pictures would cause a divorce!

I might just get a nice chrome SP body & send it to Japan to be painted black but forget about the motor drive. My dream camrera has always been a black Nikon SP with the S36 motor. Could I have gotten an S2 with a Nikkor 1.4? Sure but I like the IIa better (personal preference!). I have a CV 25mm lens that I just bought along with a Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 so when I get the the IIa back I will have a useable kit (25mm, 50mm, 105mm lenes). I plan on using it along with my four Leicas. While you would not inverst $300 in an overhaul, I would (and am as my IIa is at Henry's right now). That's less that DAG charges so I see it as a bargain. Understand that the $300 Contax repair by Henrey is $225 for the body and $75 for the lens. If I purchased a Nikon S2/S3 it would go to the best repair person I could find. All my Leicas go to DAG (he's done 7 Leicas for me), my Hasselbalds go to Brad Sherman, lots of stuff goes to SK Grimes, etc. I always budget $250 to $300 for an overhaul by the best aviable repair person. I would also argue that ANY 1950's or 1960's camera requires service before use, Contax, Nikon, Leica, or Hasselblad for that matter. All I was saying is that it costs less to get a Contax IIa than a Nikon S2 which have equivealent viewfinders. Your offer validates exactly what I am saying: The market values a Nikon S3/S2 higher than a Contax IIa. It's great that you can but to argure values based on the owner doing the overhaul is not logical from a real world perspective. Not all of us have the skills to overhaul a camera, let alone a Contax IIa. I understand your logic but it has a flaw.
